Digital Rights & Responsibilities Pgs. 29-31

In regards to inappropriate use of technology in the schools...how is this handled at your site?

  1. Our 8th grade teachers are making a special effort to check work for plagiarism and correct citing. Inappropriate use results in students loosing access. We also spend a lot of time talking about real situations - the lady in the fountain being one. Bullying on Facebook. Protecting your identity on the web.

My favorite is the horror I get when I tell kids that I have been to their facebook page and how disgusting their language is - I do not have the right to view their stuff I get told - and so we have a long discussion and viewing of the Terms and Conditions of Use and exactly what Public means

  2. Even though I believe we are making a consolidated effort to look for plagiarism in the school (especially in the language arts classes of the upper grades), I am not sure it is being addressed throughout the school. I try to continuously reinforce the idea of actions and consequences in all areas of the classroom and the responsibilities of students and teachers. Even though we do talk about bullying and protecting your identity, I am not sure that the message is really being heard with the exception of some very observant parents.
