Digital Health & Wellness Pgs. 31-33

Every time I read information about digital health and wellness I find myself at a loose.  Are you aware of this (both the physical and mental aspect) when you are using technology? Do you ever have discussions with your students?

  1. Would poor health include the fact that I am currently on my couch with my laptop on my lap responding??? I think that we will be the generation with the most carpel tunnel issues. Yes I do talk to the kids about ergonomics - our kids are probably going to be the generation with the worst texting hand issues.

  2. I am aware of the mental and physical problems associated with technology (and have seen severe manifestations in a few students); however, I have not done in the way of discussions with my students. In many ways, I am not sure if we are not the biggest ongoing experiment to occur and I wonder if we are going to become people who were portrayed in the world of Wall-E.

  3. I have to say I do not discuss physical health in regards to use of technology. I like Glynis am bad about lighting, posture, elbow height... I am a huge infractor myself. I am so bad I am excellent about the health of my hardware and the ways the kids conduct the use of that hardware almost to the extreme of being a hardware Nazi. Don't twist the screen, don't put your feet on the CPU, don't pull on the cords and the ports. I can't remember the last time I asked if they thought they might be a bit close to the screen. My bad!

  4. Teach me the exercises!!! I want to learn them and I will teach them to our staff. I don't think we are all aware of how to help prevent carpel tunnel.

  5. Mary Konczal (the Great) explained that the vibrations, if you will, emitted from the fluorescent lights in my room run at a different speed than those emitted from my computer and this causes... um... crazy teacher syndrome? I think that's what she said. Maybe I should ask again. Until then I do the majority of my work with the lights off.

  6. I'm like Lindze, I do most of my work with the lights off. I also have the lights off during the day. Between the windows, the SmartBoard, and the computers there is a TON of light in the room. I encourage my kids to exercise. However, it is hard to explain the negative health effects of video games and computers to first graders.
